As of today, I have finished Mad Men. Here, by myself, in another city I am familiar with, but not with the one who introduced me to the series.
It's been a long journey and it's still going on. But I really learned a lot through it, I loath Don for his private life but admire his work and his sometimes sparkling trait. I love how Peggy and Joan stand up on their own and work their own way up to the ladders. I enjoy watching how all these characters live their lives in the era. It's not just about the career, the advertising, the 60s, it's about everything. The sentimentality, the heroism, the pragmatism, the idealism. Their world may seem a little bit different from mine, but it boils down to the same thing. You always have to take care of yourself and be stronger and faithful.
I didn't watch it in a sequential way but the way I watch gives me a rather new perspective. Don's not having a smooth career, ebbs and flows can be tracked in every season. Good timing is not the ordinary, bad timing it is. Company being merged, being pulled out of big accounts, being merged again, being bought, there are always something you don't want it to happen around the corner. But there they are, this is how life goes on.
It's not about forcing you to believe how life is wonderful, it's about showing you how life is and gives you the decision to decide to like it or not. There are sufferings everywhere, people crashed and gone, things happened and again, it's inevitabe. But it's between these occurences that you gained this equanimity. You know things happen for sure but you will be fine.
