I thought it was a playful movie at the very beginning, but turned out it was filled with unavoidable intensity throughout. It’s a movie about the less-spoken conflicts symbolically between a mother and a son. Nancy, a retired religious teacher who’s been uptight and had a strong stand of rightness in everything, was surprisingly looking for sex service from a symmetrically fit, model-like 20-something sex worker Leo. Sex, which used to be a taboo between the two generations, has now become the connection between the two characters. The intensity of the movie has been built up mostly from the high-pitch sped-up conversation from Nancy, who has been probing Leo’s privacy via a condescending tone. Her curiosity, or concern, upon Leo was mostly circling around why he chose to be a sex worker and how his mother thinks about his job. The questions Nancy asked Leo actually speaks themselves about her value in life - she cared so much about what other people think that she had faked her orgasm in front of her now-deceased husband and was still trying to be a good and patient mother when her daughter called up for a trivial crisis. She cared so much that she also judged others, and herself. Leo, playing the cool kid and seemed to be a maturer adult between the two, chilled out on everything Nancy asked, until she asked about his mom and said she could offer Leo help to confess to his mother about his sex-worker job. The argument between the two was just like a mother ‘correcting’ her child. A while ago, Leo was still trying to please his client Nancy, symbolically portraying a mother. A while ago, the dynamics of them were still weirdly sexual and intimate. Now, he was on his way storming out of the hotel room. The insecurity and distrust suddenly filled in the room were just like one kind of the typical insecurity and ambivalent relationship between a mother and a child. It was so familiar and common in nowadays’ family dynamics that it’s so easy to be unseen. A mother who was disappointed at her children, judging his son boring and her daughter uncontrolled, and always thought she’s right. Of course the mother judged herself being out of shape. At last of the movie, Nancy asked Leo out for a coffee in the hotel instead of an intercourse. Nancy apologised for what she had said to Leo and even apologised to the hotel waitress that she humiliated and judged a minute ago. This is a so much needed apology for Leo, who never got one from his real mother. Leo’s mother cut off the connection with him because he was ‘exploring’ sex during pubity. An apology is what a child needs from his/her parent.
