All South of Vietnam is a battlefield. If the American required that a democracy is built on those ruins, that was unrealistic. Clearly, South of Vietnam was more democratic, but in such a violent struggle, the side whose soldiers had fewer doubts and asked fewer questions would win.

"Our interest there was 70% to avoid humiliation, 20% to China and 10% to help the Vietnamese." You can't just be a neutral witness to something like war. It crawls down your throat, it eats you alive from the inside and out. It's not something you can stand back and be neutral and objectvie and all of these things we try to be as reporters, journalists and photographers. It doesn't work that way.

One day I got on the bus with other recent graduates. We raised our hands and get in the army. But it was not a decision, it was a forfeiture of decision. I was letting my body go, turning a switch to my conscientiousness, just turning it off. So it won't be barking at me.
