a low budget film with a little cliched yet surprising story, amazing characters, and an astounding performance by Joaquin Phoenix. for some moments I thought I was watching Leon, Taken, and John Wick combined, but the quickly upcoming plot twists and the consistent focus on Joe's and his characters only make me realize this film is way more depressing & different than those. there're no unnecessary shots. every one of them makes sense and provides new information that explains and/or foreshadows the character's decisions and motives, some of which are really unexpected. all the flashbacks are extremely concise and cut-in beautifully. the score is mostly standard but still interesting: the drums kinda remind me of those in Bird Man (2014). the rest of the presentation is okay and acceptable considering the film's noticeable low on budgets. overall it's a solid and very enjoyable film that's worth 9/10
