Feb 13, 2014, the Treize Gallery presented the first screening in Paris of Jodie Mack’s films, as she was making a small detour on her way back home to the States from the recent Rotterdam International Film Festival. The coolest film was saved for the last: Let Your Light Shine. For this film, everybody was given a pair of “rainbow diffraction glasses” that bend the light and separate it into colors, like a prism. What on film is simple white lines and shapes in simple movements against a black background, but what we see through the glasses is the colorful three-dimensional body of the white light. On one hand, it reminds me of the imagery in early digital artworks; on the other, it reminds me of Line Describing A Cone. Both works brilliantly render the figure, one optical and one spatial, of light visible through a simple apparatus.
