village, must literally sacrifice his household. First, the house
stands in the way of an irrigation canal for the good of all.
When villagers rebuild the house for the Lucs, he again
sacrifices it to the needs of children for a school. Can Mrs.
Luc come to understand how the private needs of the family
fit into the needs of the people and the state? Domestic
